Ingredient List

Ingredient List for Chocolate Brownie Halloween Dirt Cups

Brownies  Add structure, texture, and flavor to this yummy Halloween dessert.

Oreo CookiesThe cookies bring crunch to the dessert while also delivering the sand-like look that renders the feel of dirt in the Halloween dessert.

Halloween decor Sour bite crawlers/ edible bones and skulls/ candy eyes To decorate this Chocolate Brownie Halloween Dirt Cups and make it look creepy.

Unsalted butter  This is used for preparing the Nutella frosting.

Sugar — Powdered sugar is used for preparing the frosting.

Nutella — This renders a perfect cocoa flavor and richness to the frosting.

Salt — Just a pinch of this to neutralize the sweetness and intensify the flavors of other ingredients.

Vanilla Essence  The vanilla essence flavor added to the frosting takes it to another level.

Cream Homemade whipped cream is best for preparing the frosting as it is the creamiest and richest. However, you can also substitute this with cream cheese.

Recipe Tips and Variations

Plan it ahead This is a make-ahead recipe, and you can prepare the cup layers a day in advance, keeping the cookies for adding later as they may get soft. For assembling, I usually wait until the day of the party when I can surprise my guests with these eerily delicious Halloween candy dirt cups.

Skip the brownie layer — You can skip the brownie layer and alternate between the crushed Oreo layer and Chocolate Mousse. This also makes a super yummy dessert.

Crush the Oreo to sand-like texture — Oreo is added to the dessert to give a sand-like texture and feel. For this, you can pulse the Oreo cookies in a food processor to achieve a sand-like texture. If you don’t have a food processor, don’t bother; toss the Oreo cookies in a plastic bag and seal it. Now, pound the bag with a rolling pin for the crushed cookies.

Remove the cream before pulsing Remember to remove the cream from the Oreo cookies before crushing them, as the cream will create a sticky mixture, whereas we are looking for a sand-like texture.

Alternative to whipped cream — You can use cream cheese in the place of whipped cream for this Oreo and brownie dirt cup. It will create a more decadent chocolate layer that is truly irresistible!

Alternative to the Mousse layer — You can use a no-cook chocolate pudding mix to create a pudding layer instead of the Mousse layer. It doesn’t require any cooking; therefore, it whips up quickly. If you prefer a thicker Mousse-like consistency, mix it with whipped cream and enjoy the rich delicacy.

Chocolate Brownie Halloween Dirt Cups in a dirt plate

For portion-controlled serving — Use smaller cups to make this delicious dessert portion-controlled. I have used 9- ounce plastic disposable cups to create these dirt cups. You can also use small mason jars if that looks interesting.

For a super decadent treat — You can use chocolate ganache mixed with whipped cream to achieve that extra decadence that makes this Dirt Halloween Cups with brownie truly drool-worthy.

To make it look more real You can put patches of green frosting on the top layer, giving the Halloween dirt cups a grass-like look that catches attention.

Get creative You can go endlessly creative with this adorably charming Halloween dessert and top them with any festive and fun treats like gummy worms, Halloween sprinkles, bone skeleton candy, candy eyeballs, mini pumpkins, pumpkin candies, and more.

INSTRUCTIONS

PREPARE BROWNIES

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Spray an 8×8-inch baking pan with cooking spray, then line it with parchment paper. Allow the parchment paper to overhang on each side, as it makes it easy to lift our baked brownies. Set aside.
    Grease a baking pan
  • In a large mixing bowl, sift together flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, Instant coffee, and salt. Set it aside.
  • Add aquafaba to a bowl. Using the balloon attachment of your stand mixer, beat aquafaba for 4-5 minutes on medium-high speed until frothy.
Add sugar and beat until it resembles a fluff
  • Test by holding the whisk blade upside down. Aquafaba should hold its shape and not fall off the blade. Time to proceed further.
    Aquafaba peaks
  • Pour in oil, vinegar, sugar, and essence into the bowl. Fold the mix until it is well blended with aquafaba.
    Add oil mixture
  • Add dry ingredients, fold, and mix until it forms a smooth and lump-free batter.
Combine until it forms a batter
  • Pour the batter into the prepared tray.
  • Tap the pan to release trapped air.
  • Bake for 20 – 22 minutes or until the toothpick comes out with a few crumbs attached.
  • Allow it to cool then cut the brownie in squares.
  • Transfer it to a bowl.
  • And make crumbs.
  • Likewise, add Oreo cookies to a bag and coarsely crush them using a rolling pin.
  • For the frosting – In a stand mixer bowl, whip heavy cream, sugar, and vanilla together over medium speed.
Mix these until you get medium-sized peaks and the cream thickens.
  • Transfer frosting to a large piping bag, snip off the narrow end, and it's time to fill the cups. Fill the base of each cup with brownie crumbs.
  • Pipe frosting into the glasses. Top with another brownie layer followed by frosting, and repeat until the glasses are 3/4 filled.

RECIPE NOTES

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these Halloween Dirt Cups in advance?
Yes, you absolutely can! The individual layers of this Halloween Dirt Cup, such as the Mousse, Oreo dirt, and the Brownie layer, can be made a day in advance and stored in separate containers in the refrigerator. I suggest layering everything together once you are ready to serve them.
If stored after assembling everything, the Oreos and gummies will become soggy in the fridge and turn the dessert unappetizing.

How can I store this recipe?
Halloween dirt brownie cups are best served upon assembly. However, they’ll last a few hours before the cookie crumbs get soggy. Even if the top layer gets saturated, it’s still safe to eat – it’s just that it will not have that sand-like crunchy texture (feel) left to it.
Another option is to top them with an extra layer of Oreo cookies to get some crunch back into your bite.
