Ingredient List

Asian Chicken Lettuce Wrap Ingredient List

Olive Oil — For inducing authentic flavors to the recipe, olive oil is used for sautéing the aromatics. Any neutral-flavored oil or vegetable oil will also work and can be used in place of Olive Oil.

Ground Chicken — I have used lean ground chicken as my protein option in this non-vegetarian savory recipe. It is perfectly suitable for this recipe as it has a neutral flavor and is low in fat.

Hoisin Sauce — The authentic flavors of this recipe are brought by the sauces used in it. Hoisin sauce is a salty and spicy Chinese BBQ sauce with a thick consistency and a slight tanginess. It has a subtle sweetness too, and a distinct flavor that makes this recipe irresistibly delicious and aromatic.

Soy Sauce — Lends an enticing hue and tons of flavor to this Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps recipe. Use a low-sodium soy sauce to avoid too much saltiness in the final dish.

Sriracha — It is a thick sauce with a spicy, tangy, and sweet flavor with a hint of garlic flavor too. You can use it to add heat to this savory recipe. However, if you do not like the spiciness in your dish, please feel free to skip it or reduce its quantity. You can also substitute Sriracha with chili garlic sauce for its unique flavor.

Rice Vinegar — Adds a hint of acid to the recipe while balancing various flavors.

Sesame Oil — While taking the delectability of this recipe up by a notch, sesame oil brings out the classic Asian-inspired flavors that the dish needs. Use toasted oil for a more authentic, nutty, and pronounced flavor.

Brown Sugar — Adds a melodic sweetness to the recipe making it more tempting.

Fresh Garlic and Ginger — An essential ingredient of Asian cuisine, garlic ginger adds tons of flavor and aroma to the recipes. These delicious aromatics add intensity to these Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps.

Onions — Green onion make the recipe crunchier and render enticing color.

Salt — Used as a seasoning (only if it is required). But since so many sauces are already used in the recipe, you probably will not need to add more salt.

Shiitake Mushrooms — The classic preparation of this Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps recipe includes the usage of water chestnuts. However, I have used shiitake mushrooms due to the unavailability of the water chestnuts, and so can you. These bring to the recipe a very desirable crunch besides the flavor.

Red Bell Peppers — I prefer red pepper over the others as these add a sweet touch and crunch to the recipe. The trick is to slice the red bell peppers small, which ensures better cooking.

Bib Lettuce — Also known as butter lettuce, bib lettuce is mild in flavor with broad, crisp, and curled-up leaves that easily hold the filling. Bib lettuce makes the recipe easier to eat as it is perfect for holding the filling and perfect for lettuce wraps.

Roasted Peanuts — This recipe is garnished with roasted peanuts, adding an extra crunch!

Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps Recipe Tips and Variations

Preparing the lettuce — Make the lettuce recipe ready before you begin with the recipe. Start by trimming the base of the lettuce and separating each leaf layer. Keeping the fresh ones aside, discard the old and wilted ones. Rinse the leaves thoroughly with tap water and pat dry on a kitchen towel. Your clean and fresh leaves are now ready to be used as wraps!

Choosing the suitable lettuce — A sturdy and foldable leaf is preferred as a wrap; therefore, butter lettuce fits the bill. However, Iceberg lettuce will also work well, though its leaves are relatively crispier. Romaine hearts can also be used, but their leaves are more like long taco-shaped, which makes them unsuitable for wrapping. However, the leaves are crisp enough to hold the filling.

Replacing the protein — This recipe is prepared using lean chicken, but it can be replaced if you want your recipe genuinely vegan. Vegan protein like Portobello mushrooms and crumbled tofu can be one of the best vegan protein options for the recipe.

Switching the form of meat protein — There are other ways to use meat protein in this recipe. Ground chicken can be replaced with diced chicken breasts for a chunkier experience. However, make sure the diced chicken is the same size for even cooking.

Fill the lettuce with Asian chicken filing

Perk-up the flavor — Since chicken itself is bland in taste, I prefer to add some mix-ins in the form of veggies to perk up the flavor. Besides adding to the flavor, veggies add more nutrition to these Chicken Lettuce wraps.

Customizable recipe — This recipe can be entirely customized to one’s liking and preferences. You can bulk up the filling for these lettuce wraps with whatever veggies you prefer. Try adding bean sprouts, carrots, baby corn, bamboo shoots, or diced bell peppers to elevate the deliciousness and healthiness of this recipe.

Just fork-tender is enough — While cooking the veggies, ensure they are briefly cooked until just fork-tender. Over-cooking will make them mushy and unappetizing, so refrain from overcooking the veggies.

Moderately spiced to the spicier recipe — As written and cooked, this recipe is moderately spiced. If you like it spicier, feel free to add extra Sriracha, chili oil, chili paste, or crushed chili flakes for some extra heat.

Cook ahead for easy assembling — The filling for these Asian Chicken Wraps can be prepared and stored for easy assembling later. So, the next time you plan to treat your guests to this delicious dish, cook the chicken and veggies filling in advance. Reheat it and serve it wrapped in the lettuce leaves.

Low-sodium Soy sauce for this recipe — I prefer a low-sodium Soy sauce as I can control the salt content in the recipe. However, Soy sauce can be swapped for Tamari Sauce or coconut aminos if you want the lesser salty option.

Alternative ways of serving — You can traditionally serve this irresistibly delicious recipe using lettuce as the wraps. An assortment of wraps can be prepared and served using corn tacos or tortillas as a wrap, with a pita or over steamed rice. Each one tastes incomparably scrumptious.
