Possibilities and choices are endless. You can create a line of these appetizers (either as bowl or as tacos) filled with assorted flavors and arrange them on a platter. Talk about deliciousness, now doesn’t this sounds super yum!! Recipe adapted from here.Grilled Tofu Wonton Tacos or Bowls

Making tacos or bowls!

The first step is to bake or fry wonton wrappers. Below, I have displayed two ways of making wonton tacos or bowls. The bowl version is the baked one and tacos are shallow fried. You can try either one of those, both tastes amazing. Above all it’s VEGAN!

Frying a wonton like a taco is a tedious job. The trick is to fold wonton and fry in such a way that there is enough opening left for stuffing. My first couple of attempts ended in a mess. Then, came a helper – aluminium foil.

I folded the wontons in half, placed a foil in-between the folds and fried it from both sides. This way I got perfect tacos. After removing from oil, let the foil sit in the wrapper until the wonton wrapper becomes crisp.

Baking was a breeze. Line up a muffin tray with wonton wrappers, bake until brown and there you have it – perfectly baked wonton bowls. They bake into a crispy wonton bowls waiting to be filled. 😉Grilled Tofu Wonton Tacos or Bowls

Now on to the recipe! Grilled Tofu Wonton Tacos or Bowls

Please don’t be intimidated by seeing such a long recipe. To make it understand better, this recipe is divided into 4 parts. First part includes preparation of protein. I have used grilled tofu here but you can easily swap tofu with other form of protein – chicken or paneer would be great additions too.

Next two steps involve making of the sauces. No cooking required- just mixing of the ingredients. If you can find these sauces in your local grocery store then it will save you some time. Final step involves assembling of these tacos or bowls.

For this recipe homemade wonton wrappers are used . You can follow the recipe hereGrilled Tofu Wonton Tacos or Bowls

A sort of make ahead appetizer!

Not only these tacos/bowls tastes amazing, but they are easy to make and can be made ahead of time.  The whole recipe is not a make ahead appetizer. It can be done in parts. Making of wontons, sauces and tofu can be done a day in advance. The rest is left for the final day. Just before serving warm tofu in microwave, assemble cole’s slaw with sauces and start filling your bowl or tacos.

Generously top with Asian salad dressing, chopped green onions and cilantro and serve right away. This makes a protein-rich, unique and flavorful party appetizer that is guaranteed to please a crowd. And if you are thinking of serving it to a large gathering or at a office potluck – Double the recipe as these cups will disappear even before you know it!

Cheers!

MAKING BOWLS OR TACOS
  1. For a homemade wonton wrappers recipe, please follow the link above (in the ingredient section).
  2. There are two ways to make tacos- either you can grill them in your oven, like the way they are shown in the picture. Brush wonton wrappers with oil and fold them on your oven rack. Grill until crispy and brown - @200 degree F for 10- 15 minutes.
  3. Other way is to fold them in half like a triangle. Place a foil (folded like a log) in between the folds and fry on both sides until brown and crispy.
  4. Remove from oil and set it on a paper towel to drain off the excess oil. Let the foil sit in the wrapper until the wonton wrapper becomes crisp.
  5. Fried Wonton wrappers are ready. Set them aside.
  6. If you like to make them into bowls - preheat oven @200 degree F. Grease a baking tray and fold wonton wrapper in each grove.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes or until light brown and crispy.
  8. Baked wonton wrappers will look like this. Set them aside.
GRILLING TOFU AND SAUCES

  2. Allow it to cool completely. Dice into small cubes. Transfer diced tofu to a plastic bag and set it aside.
  3. Meanwhile prepare ingredients for stir fry sauce.
  4. Combine ingredients in a bowl.
  5. Add sesame oil.
  6. Add cornflour/cornstarch.
  7. Whisk it well.
  8. Pour this sauce over diced tofu and
  9. Shake well to coat.

    Hi Ruchi

Truly enjoy your all your vegetarian & eggless recipes!
I would like to ask if Rice Wine Vinegar is a necessary to make the Asian Dressing?
Is there another alternative to it?

    Thank you 🙂

    • Ruchi says:

      Thanks Aarti!
Vinegar adds a delicious tangy touch to this dressing. You can substitute rice vinegar with regular vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
