Vrat ka HalwaWhat is your favorite sweet during Navratri? For me it is –  quick and easy vrat ka halwa. Mom made this delicacy by combining two flours – kuttu flour and Amaranth flour and I also prefer to make it the same way. It’s delicious, tasty and full of flavor!

Vrat ka halwa or kuttu ka halwa is a quick and easy dessert that can be prepared and cooked in less than 30 minutes. This halwa can be eaten during any fast/vrat like Janmashtami, Mahashivratri, Ekadashi or for Satyanarayan pooja.

During fasting days people consume fruits, dry fruits, milk products, some veggies and flours. Singhara flour (water chestnut flour), Kuttu flour (buckwheat flour) and Amaranth flour (Rajgiria flour) are commonly eaten during fasting period. These flours are gluten-free and a good source of protein.

Six ingredients is all you need to prepare this simple yet delicious halwa. Very versatile recipe – the two flours mentioned below can be swapped with any other vrat flour.

Combine the flours and cook in ghee until light brown in color. Keep a watchful eye during cooking as these flours brown quickly.
how to prepare Singhare ke atte ka halwa

Pour in sugar + water mix and stir continuously to avoid lump formation. Keep stirring and do not leave halwa unattended at this point or it will get burnt. Water can be substituted with milk for a creamy texture.

Stir until water evaporates and the halwa starts to come together in a form of as dough. Remove from heat and serve immediately. Taste best when eaten hot garnished with chopped nuts of your choice.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1/2 cup Kuttu Flour
  • 1/2 cup Amaranth flour (Rajgiria flour)
  • 1 cup Superfine Sugar or Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Eliachi Powder (Cardamon Powder)
  • 2 cups Water
  • 3 tablespoon Ghee
CHANGE SERVING SIZE: PEOPLE

METHOD
  1. Assemble ingredients.
  2. Heat water in a pan.
  3. Add sugar.
  4. Mix and..
  5. Heat until sugar dissolves. It will take few minutes.
  6. Add eliachi powder and set it aside.
  7. Heat ghee in a pan.
  8. Add flours..
  9. Keep cooking and stirring over a medium flame.
  10. Until the color changes to slightly light brown.
  11. Lower the flame and carefully pour in hot water.
  12. Keep stirring to avoid lump formation.
  13. Within minutes, halwa will start to thicken.
  14. Take it off the flame, garnish with nuts and enjoy!!
