Hindu festivals Lohri and Makar Sakranti are around the corner and the markets are filled with sights of til sweets, peanut chikki and gur/jaggery sweets. Til and jaggery are an essential part of this festival. In winter months, til sweets are consumed to mark the harvest season around India. Here is a simple recipe to celebrate the festive occasion – Til Ke Ladoo Recipe.

Til ke ladoo recipe also known as TILKUT is prepared by combining gur, mawa, sugar, chopped nuts, desiccated coconut with toasted sesame seeds. Til (sesame seeds) have a nutty flavor that adds a delicious flavor and texture to these ladoos.

Besides flavor, sesame seeds have many health benefits due to its nutritional content. They are an excellent source of copper, magnesium, iron, zinc and many other nutrients. They are also considered as anti- inflammatory and has excellent healing properties.

RECIPE DETAILS – This is a basic ladoo recipe that calls for dry toasting of sesame seeds and is later grounded to its powdered form. Toast sesame seeds to a point where they are lightly brown in color. Overcooking will result in dark bitter tasting sesame seeds.

Since I ran out of mawa, I have used ricotta cheese for mawa. But if you already have mawa then skip this step. Follow this link to learn 6 ways of making mawa at home.

For this recipe, you can skip sugar altogether and add gur/jaggery. Jaggery adds a deep rich color to these ladoos. Sugar will add moisture to the whole mixture making it easier to shape. But if substituting with gur, you may need to add few drops of milk to shape ladoos. Finally add nuts of your choice and enjoy this healthy Til ke ladoo recipe.

Come celebrate the warmth of Lohri festival with these homemade sweets –  til patti, atte ki pinni, peanut chikki and dal ki pinni. If you happen to make these ladoos then share your yum pictures with me @Facebook or drop me a line below!

can we use condensed milk (Amul’s) instead of Mawa?

    • Ruchi says:

Vaishali, have not tried these ladoos with condensed milk but I guess you can use it. Skip sugar and jaggery altogether. To begin with add 1/3 cup of condensed milk. Taste and adjust accordingly. Thanks!

Undeniably delicious. Never like the strong flavor of sesame in sweets but crushing til made the flavor mild and perfect balance of sweetness. Thanks for the lovely recipe. Even my kids are enjoying it.
