"Famous Indian Mythology Story" |
Pavanputra Hanuman |
| This is a story
of Hanuman. He is also known as Bajarangbali. It consists of two words: bajarang and bali.
Bajarang, which means with a strong iron-like body. Bali means all powerful. He has
another name, Maruti, meaning son of Vayu (wind). Hanuman was the son of Anjani, and was considered very intelligent. He was proficient in grammar and music. He was a worshipper and devotee of Ram and believed in devotion and sacrifice. Exciting events from Hanuman's life are presented here in simple and lucid language for children. When he was still a child, his mother, Anjani, had assured
him that he would never be destroyed and when he feels hungry he can have fruits as red
and ripe as the rising sun. He was very mischievous in his childhood, once on the day of solar eclipse, Hanuman ran towards Rahu, and Rahu had to take help of Lord Indra. One of his popular mischievous were that one day he saw Airavata ( Indra's white elephant) and tried to attack him. Seeing this attempt of the valorous monkey, Indra used his thunderbolt (vajrayudha) which hit the child's chin (hanu) and hurled him to the earth. (It is from this event that Anjani's monkey son came to be known as Hanuman.) When Vayu, the Wind god, carried him off to Pataal in such a precarious condition, life on earth came to a standstill in the absence of air. Living beings felt breathless and were dying. All the gods went to Vayu and blessed the child. Brahma blessed the monkey child with immortality, invulnerability, enduring devotion to God, and prowess (bravery). Agni blessed him, Saying, "Fire will never burn you." Kaal was no less generous, "May not death overcome you." Vayu blessed him with more speed than he himself had. Indra said, "No weapon of any kind shall wound you or hit your body." All the gods, blessed him saying that, "None will ever equal you in strength and speed." Surya gave him two siddhis of yoga namely "laghima" and "garima". With "laghima" he could attain the smallest form and with "garima" he could attain the biggest form of life. This Event is from Ramayana
- Ram and Sugriva promised to help each other to find Sita. When Hanuman was searching for Sita he met Sampati who was brother of Jatayu. Jatayu was killed while he was trying to stop Sita from being kidnapped by Ravana. Sampati told Hanuman that he could see Sita being kept in Ashokvatika in Lanka. When Hanuman Reached Lanka and met Ravana, Ravana did not
offer Hanuman a chair to sit. Hence Hanuman created his own thorn by extending his tail
long enough and then sitting in front of Ravana. Ravana was shocked to see this and called his demons to set
Hanuman's tail on fire. When Hanuman went to Lanka Ravana's soldiers tied Hanuman's tail
with rags fabrics and Hanuman made the tail longer and longer. The exhausted demons set
fire to his tail. Now it was Hanuman's turn he jumped all over Lanka setting the entire city ablaze with his tail still on fire.In the fight between Ram and Ravana to free Sita, Ravana made an assault on Ram Seeing this, Hanuman, roving his club, came close to Ravana. To show the might of Hanuman, he did not hit Ravana with his "Gada", the Club, but gave a big blow with his free hand. Ravana's entire body and his ten heads were terribly shaken.
This event is from the Mahabharata - One day Draupadi ( the queen of the pandavs) asked Bhim( the Pandav) to get her a flower of lotus Bhim said, "Oh ! it's nothing. I will bring you in a second." On his way he found Hanuman sleeping on the road. Bhim did not recognize him and said, "O, you old man, move away from the road" Hanuman told him to move his tail off the road first and then he will move away. Bhim the strongest of the Pandavas was not able to lift Hanuman's tail.
She was surprised and asked for an explanation. In reply, Hanuman tore off his chest with his nails and showed everyone the word Ram engraved in his heart. Even today the idol of Hanuman, god of protection, is found in the temples of Ram. |
