How to make Self rising flour

How to make Self rising flour

Another staple in my kitchen – Self rising flour. Having self rising flour on hand can help you with many recipes and all of the ingredients come right of our pantry!! Never try to substitute one for another – for example never substitute self rising flour with all purpose flour as the end recipe would be a disaster – it won’t rise.

True to its name self rising flour is a flour in which leaving agents (which cause a dough to rise or ferment) are already mixed in – all you have to do is add rest of the ingredients that your recipe suggest and you are good to go.  But if a recipe calls for all purpose flour than you need leaving agents like baking soda or baking powder to make it work. As compared to regular flour self rising flour adds soft and flaky texture to a recipe.

    Hi Ruchi,

Could you please tel me if all purpose flour is a maida? I am trying to bake my first cake for my husband and my nephew, referring to your 7 ingredients and 7 mins microwave cake, could you also suggest me if I can use butter and oil both instead of only oil..? Since I want to bake, could you let me know how much time and Celsius should I need to set in the oven..?

Your guidance will help me a lot.
    Thank you in advance
    Sowmya

      Thanks for stopping by Soumya!
      1. All purpose flour is maida.
      2. Please use one – either butter or oil. Yes, you can use butter.
      3. For conventional oven – bake it at 350 degree F (180 degree C) for 40-50 minutes or until the toothpick comes out clean. Depending on the oven, baking time may vary.
      Happy Baking!!

Shereen, please read a recipe before using self rising flour. If a recipe calls for all three ingredients – all purpose flour + baking powder + salt then self rising flour can be used along with other listed ingredients. But if any of the three ingredients are not listed in a recipe, I would suggest using all purpose flour.
