Birth Legend: Though there are several accounts of his birth, but one given by the chalisa and our elders is celebrated as a divine twist of fate.It all began when Mata Parvati, wanted to bathe. She wanted someone who should look on the door in case if anyone tries to enter and since there was no one at hand, she created a guard from the scurf of her body (i.e.with the sweat and oils from her body) so that he could act as her door-guardian. She brought the figure of a young man to life and told him to stand as a guard while she bathed.

Shivji Killing GaneshSoon after that Shivji, her husband, came back from his "Samadhi", he didn't know that Ganesha was his son.

Ganesha didn't let lord Shiva in the house because mother Parvati was bathing.Lord Shiva got  furious, and a duel began.

The gaurd fought well, but was no match against the might of Shiva, who enraged at this obstruction, had killed him by cutting off his head.Paravti came out and saw the dead body and demanded that he should be brought back to life.

In order to placate Parvati, Shiva sent his hordes to collect the head of the first living being, who was sleeping with head facing north.

Airavat, Indra’s white elephant paid the price for Shiva’s blunder as he was sleeping facing the north, Shiva’s hordes beheaded him and brought his head for the dead body. But annoyed Parvati demanded that her child must be promoted to the status of a primary god. Shiva and all the other gods knew this was the only way they could placate her and Ganesha took his place before all the gods.

Blessed: Ganesha was blessed by Lord Shiva that " His image invokes the universe, his head signifies wisdom and lots of knowledge; his body is globular and symbolizes the ability to digest everything good or bad from the people. Chubby , gleeful and elephant headed, Ganesha easily finds his place in the hearts of Gods and people. With his elephant head and human body, Ganesha embodies qualities of two of Nature's most intelligent creatures. Ganesha is a peaceful, calm god.
